Mission Statement
The mission of the Gig Harbor Historic Waterfront Association (GHHWA)
is to bring together community and Waterfront District stakeholders
in order to encourage economic vitality and to preserve the historic
character and quality of the area.
Goals/Objectives
2010
ORGANIZATION COMMITTEE
Goal: Provide effective leadership and involvement in the program
Objectives:
- Develop effective and stable funding strategy
- Board member solicitation of new members
- Increase targeted solicitation of significant contributors
- Create new fundraiser event (See Food and Wine Festival)
- Write quarterly progress reports to funders
- Solicit sponsorships to support/underwrite events
- Establish strong and committed volunteer base
- Work with our local community organizations to increase our cross section of participation (Garden gurus, Midday Rotary, Morning Rotary, Harbor History Museum, Gig Harbor BoatShop, Gig Harbor Film Festival, Peninsula Art League, Gallery Assn, Chamber of Commerce, New Neighbors)
- Create an Awards Sub-Committee for acknowledging volunteer and leadership efforts
- Hold volunteer training and meetings
- Volunteer staff for office activities (~10-15 hrs/week)
- Develop good channels of communication
- Establish Welcome Committee
- Establish Communications group to manage electronic communications
- Maintain Constant Contact Monthly newsletter and news blasts as necessary
- Implement web site enhancement to work with Network Solutions
- Create Network Solutions landing page for member ads
- Further develop and leverage social media (Facebook, Twitter)
- Send out email blasts for information relevant to district members on maintenance and construction projects in the district
- Support Roundtable meetings for organization
- Enhance the informational booth at summer concert program
- Continue relevant webinars for Main Street education and enhancements for merchants
- Quarterly report card for inclusion in membership brochure
- Operations
- Establish time card system for non-profit org compliance
- Establish volunteer time reporting system for volunteers
- Conduct annual elections and hold annual meeting
- Develop annual budget and annual city contract
- Implement Finance Committee and reporting
PROMOTIONS COMMITTEE
Goal: Promote the social, cultural, and economic assets of the waterfront district
Objectives:
- Continue successful events with enhancements to increase their economic effectiveness
- Work with Chamber of Commerce on Maritime Gig Fest
- Chalk the Walk and work with the Peninsula Art League to enhance the interaction between the two organizations
- Trick or Treat in the Harbor with Pumpkin Decorating Contest Add On
- Support at the City tree lighting ceremony
- Candlelight Christmas in the Harbor - extend to two weekends (Tree Lighting weekend and following weekend)
- Support for Gallery Association Monthly Art Walk
- Support for SalmonChanted Harbor
- Develop new events
- Chocolate Walk (2010)
- Girls Night Out (2010)
- Special activities for USPGA Amateur visitors
- Special activities for celebration of Harbor History Museum opening
- Wine and Chocolate (plan event for 2011)
- Educate the public about what is available downtown through enhancement of our district map (with ED/Design Committees)
- Provide relevant webinar/training relating to promotional activities
- Develop Merchant Visitor Group Alert and package (e.g., district map, SalmonChanted Harbor map, bags)
- Add survey measurements to all activities to gauge effectiveness
DESIGN COMMITTEE
Goal: Encourage visual improvements through good design compatible with historic features
Objectives:
- Work with City to identify and implement a program for public improvements
- Flower Basket Program (all summer watering support)
- Recruit additional volunteers
- Secure funding and/or partners to continue flower basket program
- Partnership with City of Gig Harbor/community groups
- Flower Planter Box Program (all season maintenance)
- Recruit additional volunteers
- Secure funding and/or partners to continue flower basket program (Adopt a Planter)
- Partnership with City of Gig Harbor/community groups
- Submit for Home Depot Grants
- Christmas Tree Lights
- Collaborate with City to maintain Skansie and Finholm tree light replacement
- Collaborate with City to maintain white lights on Pioneer Way and evaluate other trees to light during holidays
- Explore lighting the Eddon Boat Park tree.
- Jerisich Dock/Skansie Park Improvements
- Complete plan and gain approval from appropriate City committees
- Coordinate with City on implementation of design
- Obtain change in Sign Code to allow proposed Portal Sign over ramp to Jerisich Dock
- Solicit contributions for project
- Indentify grant opportunities for historic preservation activities with City staff particularly relating to net sheds
- Educate both members and the public about good design through webinars/seminars
- Revise and update district map (with Promotions/Economic Development Committees)
- Explore available resources for building improvements/grant applications for preservation of historic landmarks (e.g., net sheds)
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE
Goal: Strengthen and diversify the economic vitality of of the waterfront district
Objectives:
- Revise and update district map (with Promotions/Design Committees)
- Assist property and business owners in disaster preparedness
- Study the district’s current economic condition and identify growth opportunities
- Document procedures and results of past committee survey and inventories
- Bring building inventory and survey information up to date
- Review past City and COC economic studies and summarize key conclusions
- Strengthen existing businesses and recruit new ones
- Identify key economic drivers which bring customers to the district
- Coordinate relevant business education to improve effectiveness of merchants
- Explore effective methods to encourage “buy local” (e.g., 3/50 Project)
- Explore the impact and feasibility of fuel dock and seasonal transportation
- Find new economic uses for traditional buildings
- Create a resource base of available buildings and spaces and other information for business prospects
- Review next phase alternatives related to district parking flexibility
- Encourage goals and strategies for economic vibrancy consistent with historic preservation
- Encourage investment (incentives & capital) for building rehabilitation and business development
- Increase involvement and input of all community stakeholders including property owners
- Monitor the economic performance of the district (jobs, business opens/closed/moves)
FOOD & WINE FESTIVAL COMMITTEE
- Create a fund raising event in conjunction with the Harbor History Museum (August)
- 50/50 split of proceeds
- Joint steering Committee
- Enhance entire community involvement
- Create weekend of activities in the waterfront district
